The number of foreign visitors to Japan has surpassed 33 million in the first 11 months of 2024, setting a new annual record, according to data released by the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO). This milestone reflects a strong rebound in international travel, buoyed by favorable exchange rates due to a weak yen and a robust tourism boom. As reported by Kyodo News, the total number of foreign visitors from January to November reached 33,379,900.

Japan sets new record with over 33 million foreign visitors in 2024

This figure surpasses Japan’s previous annual high of 31.88 million visitors recorded in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted global tourism. In November alone, Japan welcomed 3.18 million foreign visitors, marking a year-on-year increase of 30.6 percent. Each month of 2024 has demonstrated remarkable growth, with at least a 30 percent rise in visitor numbers compared to the corresponding periods in 2023.

The surge in tourism has been attributed to several factors, including Japan’s appeal as a travel destination and the yen’s depreciation, which has made travel and shopping more affordable for international tourists. Additionally, the relaxation of pandemic-related travel restrictions has helped restore confidence among travelers. Japan has focused on expanding its tourism offerings in recent years, leveraging its rich cultural heritage, cutting-edge technology, and renowned cuisine.

Popular destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, as well as seasonal attractions like cherry blossom viewing and winter sports, have drawn significant numbers of international visitors. The government has also invested in infrastructure and marketing campaigns to attract tourists from key markets, including China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, as well as long-haul destinations like the United States and Europe.

This strategy has played a pivotal role in driving growth and diversifying the tourism sector. Japan’s record-breaking visitor numbers in 2024 underline the country’s recovery as a global tourism powerhouse and its ability to adapt to evolving travel trends. With the year not yet concluded, the total for 2024 is expected to climb even higher, further solidifying its status as one of the world’s top destinations. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
